In the fight to save lives, washing hands with soap takes centre stage
Today 15th October 2012 marks the 5th anniversary of Global Handwashing Day!
The aim is to increase awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases.  Around the world, children, teachers, parents, celebrities, and government officials plan to mobilize and motivate millions to lather up in order to reduce lifethreatening diseases, such as diarrhoeal and acute respiratory infections.

Hygiene Promotion

Hygiene education is an important component of water and sanitation projects as it maximizes the potential benefits of improved water supply and sanitation facilities. Lt also helps users to appreciate the need for their proper operation and maintenance and creates a willingness to contribute to their costs. Lt is not just sufficient to construct improved water supply and sanitation facilities.


New facilities must be used continuously by everybody and in a safe way. To maximize potential benefits water supply and sanitation projects, technical and behavioral changes must go hand in hand. CWSA approach to hygiene promotion is simply a process which aims at promoting conditions and practices that help to prevent water and sanitation related diseases.

 

The focal areas of hygiene promotion include:

 

DISPOSAL OF FAECAL MATTER

  1. Proper Disposal of Farces
  2. Promotion and Construction of Latrines
  3. Proper use and maintenance of Latrines
  4. Proper Hygiene after defecation/Hygiene practices
